Quote(s) of the Week 9

I so enjoyed playing Miss Laurie's quote game several weeks ago that I decided to host one of my own.  It's the ninth Quote of the Week (who else loves odd numbers?), so I have here fifteen quotes from various period dramas (yes, the numbers 9 and 15 have nothing do with each other, except that they're both multiples of 3.  I'm random that way.)  Your job is to guess who said each of these, and in what movie they appear.  If you can guess the person correctly, you get one point; if you guess the movie, you get another point.  Fifteen questions with a possibility of two points each; I'm no math whiz, but that would mean that the highest score you can get is 30 points.  Make sense?

Feel free to leave your answers in a comment.  The game will last until next Thursday (the 8th), at which time I'll reveal the winners.  I won't publish your comments until then, but I will reply with your scores (so that you can guess again if you missed a few).  I've removed characters' names where they are mentioned--that's where you see blanks.

Without further ado...

1) Well, he rode seven miles to bring her a wasp's nest and you don't do that for no reason!

2) She could talk the hind leg off a mule. Hmm, wouldn't that be a change around here.

3) It seems to me, that if there is a bad taste in your mouth, you spit it out. You don't constantly swallow it back.

4) Why should I break my head about the outside world? Let the outside world break its own head! Well put, no?

5) If you refuse this offer, you will be the most ungrateful, wicked girl, and the angels will weep for you.

Character 1: I don't think I shall ever learn to be a lady of leisure, ______.
Character 2: Now that is not the spirit, is it? Of course it is hard. It's downright boring sometimes but one just has to work at it.

8)
Character 1: Now, what would you like to wear? Black, black, or black?
Character 2: Are you blind? They're all black. And I will not be laughed at, servant.

9)
Character 1: He's gone to London to have his hair cut.
Character 2: His hair cut? Imperative business indeed.

10)
Character 1: I do not think you would accept my help, since I am only waiting around to kill you.
Character 2: That does put a damper on our relationship.

13) That's my sister. She's completely bald in front.

Character 2: Oh, yes, definitely. A view halloo.

  6. Okay, now for my guesses!

    1) Wives & Daughters, Miss Browning?

    2) Anne of Green Gables, sounds like Marilla Cuthbert talking about Anne

    3) Amazing Grace, Barbara Spooner talking to William Wilberforce

    4)

    5) Jane Eyre? Sounds like Aunt Reed or Mr. Brocklehurst but I'm unsure. I've definitely heard this quote before!

    6)

    7) Little Dorrit, Amy Dorrit and Fanny Dorrit

    8) The Secret Garden, Martha and Mary Lennox (love this film!)

    9) Emma 2009?, Emma and Mr. Knightley

    10) Princess Bride! Westley and Inigo Montoya

    11)

    12) Pride and Prejudice 1995, Mr. Bennet

    13) Little Women, Jo March talking to Laurie about Meg!

    14)

    15) Sense & Sensibility 1995, Mrs. Dashwood(? or Elinor) speaking about Mrs. Jennings

Quotes 4, 6, 11 and 14 sound so familiar so I'll think them over and try to guess again later when I have more time.

  7. Ella,
You are right! You now have two points. Feel free to guess again if you recognize any others!

    Anne-girl,
You now have 26 points. Good job! All of your guesses were correct--I thought I might stump you with #8, though, and I was right. :) If you can remember the characters in #1 and #4, go ahead and post it!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Miss Laurie,
Thank you for being the inspiration! I had so much fun compiling this. :)
    Now for your answers--
You have 19 points. Your guess for #1 was partially correct; the movie was right but not the character. #5 was incorrect, but do try again if you remember it! With #9, you were right about the year that movie was made (though even if it had been wrong, I wouldn't have discounted that because I didn't specify years). With #15, the movie was correct and you suggested two characters. One of those was right, so you get two points for that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Melody,
You have 15 points! #1's title was correct, but you didn't guess the character so I gave you just one point.
Haha, yes, 13 always makes me laugh!
I honestly thought you would know #11... in fact I know you do... *smiles mischievously*
Do check back again if you recognize any more!

  15. Thanks Miss Dashwood!
Let's see if I can try a few more guesses.
#1 would be Miss Phoebe I think.
Is #5 something like Nicholas Nickleby or Queen Victoria's mother in The Young Victoria? #5 is really bugging me because it sounds so familiar!
I was thinking that #11 could be The Importance of Being Earnest but now I think it's probably Sir Percy from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Alexandra,
You have 22 points! So far, you are the first person to correctly guess *who* said the first quote. :)
Haha, I knew you'd get #11 right away. I only had to restrain myself from putting in, like, 10 quotes from that character.
If you want to try again on 4, 6, 7, or 14, by all means go ahead!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Miss Laurie,
Your guesses for #1 and #11 are correct, which moves your score to 21 points! Feel free to try again on 4, 5, 6 or 14!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hint? Hint?
    =D
    Like...time era?? haha ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Melody,
You want a *hint*? How shocking!
Okay, okay, here's the hint. Monarch of the seas.. could that be a ship? Wealth and pomp of kings... court? Ship-court!

No, I'm kidding. I just couldn't resist sticking that bit in. Okay, here's your REAL hint: think swords, cravats and little red flowers.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ha, ha, ha! you make me laugh! Shipcourt, indeed!

Haha, okay, that must The Scarlet Pimpernel. >.< I'm not QUITE up on the quotes yet, since I've only seen it a couple times. I'll take a random guess and say that Sir Percy said it. :P

    ReplyDelete
  21. Melody,
Your completely random and unassisted guess is, in fact, correct. On both counts. :) This brings you to 17 points.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 14. I forgot to mention this. The movie is from " Mary Poppins."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Miss Molly, you've guessed the movie for #14 correctly and your score is now 10 points.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I only know a few of these.

#9 is Emma and Knightley from the 2009 Emma.
#10 is Inigo Montoya and Wesley from the Princess Bride.
#14 is the foxhunting party and the poor lil fox from Mary Poppins
#15 is Elinor from the 1995 Sense and Sensibility.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rachel, how lovely to hear from you again! Your answers are all correct, so you have eight points.

    ReplyDelete
  26. hmmm.
well, 1) is from Wives and daughters. Roger brought Molly the wasp nest...I do know that...but I can't remember who said it! Ugh...?

    5) My Fair Lady. Professor Higgins. Could recite that movie in my sleep. :)

    7) I'm not sure about this one- is it Little Dorrit? 1 would be Amy Dorrit, 2 would be...Fanny?

    8) from the Secret Garden Character 2 is Mary, 1 is the maid- io can't remember her name!

    9) sounds so familiar but I cannot place it...wait! Is it Emma- 1 being Emma, 2 being Mr. Knightley?

    10) Princess Bride- character 1 is Inigo Montoya, character 2 The man in black (aka Westley:)

    11) The Scarlet Pimpernel- from the man himself :)

    12) is Pride and Prejudice, thus said by Mr. Bennet to Lizzie.

    13) Little Women. Jo March :)

    14) Mary Poppins. The Hunter, the horse and the fox. I admit my sister helped me on that one.

    14) Sense and Sensibility..ummm...Eleanor said it I think...I seriously need to re-watch this movie...We're watching it this Monday...Is she speaking of Mrs. Jennings?

uhh...every one of the rest sound familiar, but I can't place them! This was really fun, though. I may try doing a quote thing sometime as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hayden dahling,
21 points, congratulations! Your guess for no. 1 was correct, but you still need the character. It seems a lot of people couldn't remember this character, so perhaps I will post a hint sometime soon. Haha, yes I could recite the movie for #5 in my sleep as well! And yes, your guess for #15 was correct on three counts: the movie, the character, and the person spoken of. :)
