The Whys and Wherefores

Also known as the Frequently Asked Questions list-- or perhaps more accurately, Some of the Most Frequently Asked Questions, Along With Some That Aren't Frequently Asked Yet, But I Am Anticipating The Possibility and Providing Information.

Who are you?

I'm Amy, I'm 22 years old right now, I'm a Christian, a college student and a sometimes-seamstress, an ISFJ, a tea drinker, a reader and a writer.  There's more, but that's the short-line-bio version.

How come your blog is called Yet Another Period Drama Blog?

Well, I started blogging back in October of 2011, and at the time I planned for my blog to be mainly centered around reviewing period dramas. (For anyone unfamiliar, a period drama-- very broadly-- refers to a movie set in an old-fashioned time period, generally with somewhat elaborate costumes and sets, often based on a classic work of literature, though not always.  Downton Abbey is a frequent example given.  Not being a fan of Downton Abbey, I offer Pride and Prejudice.  The good one.  The Colin Firth one. (not just good because of Colin Firth.))  At the time there was a plethora of blogs on the same sort of topic, so, with tongue-in-cheek, I called my blog Yet Another.  Hence, the title was born.  Often I abbreviate it as YAPDB.

In the early days, my blog was very period-drama-heavy, and in fact I blogged about little else.  In recent years, though, I've branched out a good deal.  Now it's not really accurate to call it a period drama blog, but I and my friends have become rather attached to the name, so I'm not planning on changing it anytime soon-- that's what this page and its explanations are for.

Why do you call yourself Miss Dashwood? Isn't your name Amy?

I am Elinor Dashwood!

When I first started blogging, I was 16 and really really really cautious about how much of my real identity I was going to share on the internet.  So I decided to choose a pseudonym-- and since Elizabeth Bennet was already taken (see Elegance of Fashion, where the authoress does not post much anymore, but in the old days she was the Queen of the Period Drama Fashion Blogging), I decided to go with Elinor Dashwood, since I matched up the most with her when I took personality quizzes like the one shown above.  Howeverrrr, I knew there were also one or two Elinors floating around the blogosphere, so I decided to just be Miss Dashwood.

Then a year or so later I said who cares and let you all know what my real first name was... but I kept Miss Dashwood, because I liked it. :P

What do you do when you're not blogging?

I waste way too much time on the internet... heh.  Well, right now I'm "between jobs" as they say and taking college classes in office administration. But in my spare time I like to poke around on Pinterest and read people's blogs and talk to my friends (generally over the internet... or on Skype or the phone... ).  I also like sewing, cooking (in moderation) and cleaning my bathroom. (That was two truths and a lie. Find the lie.)  And, of course, reading and watching movies.  In case you hadn't divined THAT already.

Where do you live, what is your real name, what is your social security number?

Wow, we are nosy today, aren't we? That's for me to know and you to probably not find out.

Who is Melody and why do you talk about her so much?

Who is she? Melody is my best friend in all the world, also known as the author of Regency Delight.  Why do I talk about her so much?  See first point.  We live on very-nearly opposite sides of the country, we met through blogging, we became inseparable, we have visited each other seven times at the time of this writing, we have been unofficially adopted into each other's families and she is basically the most amazing person in the whole wide world. If you aren't reading her blog, you should be.

Where else can I find you on the Internet?

Are you stalking me??  Because if so, not cool.  And if not so, I'm on Twitter, Instagram and Goodreads.  Also Pinterest.  Follow if you dare.  You can also check out my sewing blog, Dressing from the Past, or find me (verrrry occasionally) at the P&P95Forever Club.

I don't have a blog, but I want to start one.  Any advice?

Write what you know about, write what you enjoy, have fun with it, don't try to copy anyone else, be nice to other people in the blogosphere, and don't despair if people don't read it right away. If you're writing good content, readers will come.  Strike up a friendship or two with people whose work you admire and enjoy, be polite (don't shove your writing down their throats!), and the rest will take care of itself.  That third point, though. Don't forget that one.

Can you recommend a book or a movie to me?

I would love to! Shoot me an email at missdashwood95@gmail.com and I'll do my very best.  I should note that I can't provide content advisories on demand, since everyone's standards for entertainment and what-they're-comfortable-with vary greatly, but if you're looking for a good new book or film, I'd be happy to give suggestions if I can!

Hi Amy, I love your blog, I run a small weekly newspaper out of my children’s playroom. We have no advertising, we just stated printing a few weeks ago. Your reviews are beautiful. I see you haven’t updated in awhile so I hope you will see this. I would like to print your review of Miss Potter if I may. I am including a weekly movie or book review and I would like to include this next week. I would, of course, credit you, and print the link to your blog. I hope you will agree. It’s a beautiful movie that has been overlooked, I think. It is now streaming for free on Amazon, many in our community have lost jobs due to the pandemic, this would make a lovely cheap date night or family night in. Thank you.

Hi Kelly, thanks for your comment! Sorry it took me a while to get to it; I don't post here anymore and don't check the comments very often.

You are welcome to share my review of Miss Potter if you're still interested - I would only ask that you link to my current blog rather than this one! It is http://www.thebluestockingdressmaker.blogspot.com.

Thanks so much!
