My Fair Lady 50th Anniversary Watch-Along: So It Begins
Our watch-along begins at 8 PM sharp, Central Standard Time! I will be making the comments public and unmoderated at about 7:45 CST... hopefully no spam will creep in, haha. Please try and be here 15 minutes ahead of time so that we can all get set up and ready together. Also, please get your video ready and playing (and then pause it right at the beginning) so that when we start at 8:00, we won't be wading through ads or previews, but can all just start at the exact same point.
This will be the big Discussion Post, so I won't say much more, only direct you to the comment box. Oh, and please vote in the little poll I've got going over on the sidebar!

I'm So Excited!!!!!!! Miss Dashwood, Melody you two are fantastic!
How am I supposed to pick a favorite song???
I have no idea what I just did but now my movie has spanish subtitles???
Weeeeeird, Hayden. o.O Well... you'll learn some Spanish tonight, I guess. :P
haha. I already figured out how to take them off :)
Unfortunately I do have to get off the computer now, though. Thanks for hosting, Amy! :D
Aaaaand comments are open. We start in just 15 minutes!
Awww, bye Hayden! If you can come back tomorrow night maybe we'll see you then!
I've never done one of these before Miss Dashwood, do we introduce ourselves?
Yay!! Thanks for hosting this!! You guys are awesome!!! Have you heard Julie Andrews medley of all the My Fair Lady songs? It's amazing!!!
Great idea, Evelyn, let's introduce ourselves! I'm Amy. Hi.
Ashley, I LOVE Julie Andrews' rendition!
Hey! I'm Ashley! I'm 16 and I don't need a governess. I live in Phoenix and this is my second time watching this! Also, I am thankful for Google's new robot test!!
By the way, what literary transmedia characters did you invite?
Kudos for a Sound of Music reference! :D I tried to turn off word verification but apparently it's not working... it's making me type in numbers and I stinkin' OWN this blog. Um.
It's not making me type in numbers. I just have to check a box?
Cecily Cardew and Algernon Moncrieff of In Earnest... they both favorited the tweets so perhaps they'll show up tonight. :D
And I'm Melody. Hello, all. Yes, I am here too. Haha.
Hello, Melody, nice to meet you. :D
Anyone else out there? Remember, even if you don't have a blogger account, you can comment under the "anonymous" option!
5 MINUTES. I'M GETTING SQUEEPISH.
Nice to meet you too, Miss Dashwood! I'm a big fan of yours. :P
Well, ain't that a fine howdy-do. We should be friends, Miss Melody. :D THREE MINUTES FOLKS.
Thanks ever so much Miss Dashwood! I'm Evelyn a seventeen year old with a great fondness to reading, long walks in the countryside, music (both singing and the viola) and history.
My brother read over my shoulder and insists I add "Biggest Musical Nerd and Whovian"
Ash! You're hear too! :D
and oooooh exciting, that sounds fun Miss Dashwood (would you mind if I called you Amy :)? It is a little easier to type)
oh and Good Evening Melody :) It's 11.58 am here in Aus
It's 6:58 P.M. here. Are we listening/watching the overture? (I think there's one?)
Yes, please call me Amy! Much faster to type. And less formal, hahaha. Do you prefer to be called Evelyn?
I'm starting...btw I'm Alexandra and I used to blog a lot but now I don't have a life so I do theatre instead. Hello. :D
Yep, we're starting right at the beginning, overture and all... now!!
Started!
Oh Thank You Amy and yes of course! :-) Erm.. I tend to be called Evie. Likewise it's easier to type.
I skipped the overture...oops. :D
Amy...I want to hear Someone We Both Know do On The Street Where You Live...no?
Evie then! :D Gahhhhh I love this overture... and all the flowers. I read that you can hear the melody of "London Bridge" (the "my fair lady" part) in the overture somewhere but I've never been able to spot it... has anyone?
So I paused it so I'll be where you're at...someone tell me when Eliza bumps into Freddie. :D
Ally, don't skip the overture. If you do, you won't recognize the musical themes when they come back later. :P
YUSSSS ME TOOOOOO.
I really like medleys so I like most overtures! And this music is awesome!!
Oh the overture's SO lovely! I might be playing it in strings.. (I'm a violist) :D
What else did George Cukor direct?
ALL THE DRESSESSSSSSSSS
THE FASHIONS SO PREETY (just a warning I type in caps locks when I am fangirling.. like NOW! :D. Appologies in advance people :))
RAIN!!!!
I'm always amused by the fact that she calls him dear, hahahaha.
Can someone please bring back cloaks!!! And they've bumped!
Ahhh, it's pronounced haepence, not happence!!!
I'm reminded once again why Eliza is a dream role of mine. And also that my cockney sucks so that will never happen. Sigh.
You need a reverse Henry Higgins to teach you to speak improperly, Ally. Like Julie Andrews had. :P
Did Rex Harrison play on Broadway too?
So apparently detectives weren't gentlemen...
Bring back cloaks, top hats and cravats yes please! :D
Bit off topic but..
We should start a movement that has supports when we get to 2020 to bring back swing dancing, the charlston and things like that... good idea?
Blimey cow!!
Yes, Rex Harrison originated the role on Broadway.
And the Charleston is a blast. :D
He did indeed play on Broadway as well!
Haha, that sounds like fun Evie!
Garrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn!
YOUNG WOMAN! CEASE THIS DETESTABLE BOO HOOING!
...Higgins is a real jerk.
Oh yes!! It would be! and My nanna tried to teach me how to do the Charlston which she learnt from her mum.. I don't know how they did it.
You can hear the melody behind him but he just talks :D
I would LOVE so much to see this live on stage!
Tell me I'm not the only one
I need to hear someone sing this, not say it!
Why Can't The English Learn TO
Set a good example..
I always giggle at that bit
I want to be able to buy tea in a nice cup like that from a streetside thingy.
"In America ..." No! 'MURICA!! Boo Higgins, boo!!
This play is fantastic onstage. It's almost exactly like the movie. Or rather, the movie's almost exactly like the musical.
"I AM Colonel Pickering!' Love that bit.
Um, of course I'd love to see this live. LIKE REALLY REALLY BADLY.
She punted the basket!!
Ditto, Tween. Wonder if they really do have tea vendors like that in London? Nowadays, I mean?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipQmU4WjQ9o
Ash your wish has been granted by my brother.. although he talk sings a bit he sings a little :D
Watch when you have free time
Oh and It's Jeremy Irons too so that's a plus
I just found out from my mum she and Dad saw it live... and they have the program..... my jaw has hit the floor
To see this live!!! Yes!!!
Where's Capri anyway?
These guys have really good harmony!
Also, is that Audrey Hepburn's voice or is she dubbed?
Love this song.
Audrey was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, and who played one of the nuns in Sound of Music. :)
I think that this song is the one where it's easiest to tell that the singing doesn't quite match the video...
*looking up capri*
From what I know Audrey was dubbed by Marni Nixon who also dubbed West Side Story. However Audrey's real voice was used in one song and that's "Just you wait 'enry 'iggins"
Audrey Hepburn was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed Anna in The King and I, Maria in West Side Story, and appeared as a nun in Sound of Music.
I am a fount of information. :P
That guy with glasses creeps me out!
And yes, this song is loverly!
Alexandra.. we think alike! :D
and Amy too! Wow! :D
Amy-- if they do, we shall track them down.
75 comments already and we are only just into teh film.. wow!
BOO HERE COMES MR ANNOYING.
Thanks guys! Marni Nixon, yes, I've heard of her! She dubbed Maria!! Oh well, my favorite song in that movie doesn't even involve Maria :D (It's "America")
They're tap dancing!!
It kind of looks like the London of Mary Poppins!
What's on his head? It looks like what some construction workers wear in summer here!
And why is that guy sleeping in the wagon?
I love the little violin solo in WIBL :D
Mr. Annoying, hahahahahahhaha. Ugh. Him and his backwards baseball cap.
Hey guys just made via iPad! And YouTube yaaay
-jess
HAHAHA to everybody providing information about the dubbing... but there are a few bits in here actually sung by Audrey Hepburn. Like the beginning of Just You Wait, and random bits of Without You, I think.
This part of the movie always seems a bit weird and why-is-it-in-there-ish to me. With all the pausing and everything, you know.
well it's soli... :P so the whole section
it IS the London of Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins is set in 1910 and this is in 1912.
"Hop along, Charlie, you'er too ooooold for me!" --my sister's favorite part of the whole movie. :P
*you're
Fun fact, this whole flowermarket scene is leftover from the stage play-- all the pausing and freezing is part of how they set the stage for these scenes. It's really cool when you see it live.
Ahhh, that makes sense! Did he just think his own daughter was someone else?! :D
UGH I HATE ELIZA'S FATHER
"Hop along Charlie, you're too old for me!" LOVE that bit.
Well, they can get away with more when it's live, haha. You're not expecting it to be realistic, y'know?
Let's form a We Hate Halfred P. Dooli'le Fan Club. :P
HAHaHA the version I'm watching is in Spanish. Non comprendo.
That tuning fork thing is cool!
HAHA ELIZA'S HEAD
"My name is of NO concern to you whatsoever." HAHAHA.
That hat :D
Hey Jess!!!! :D
Ooooh if only I was a Soprano I could be Eliza.. #altoproblems
I meant to say Eliza's hat.
I'm not good at multi-thinking. :P
It's literally a pitch fork. Hahahahhahahahahahhaa.
I LOVE the line about her name. :D
He's wearing a Mr. Rogers cardigan :D
"BUSINESS? MANKIND WAS MY BUSINESS!"
no wait wrong movie
Hi Evie! I am not going to get far with the Spanish version.....MUST FIND ENGLISH VERSIoN.
HAHAHAHA about the Mr Rogers cardigan. It isn't red, though.
SIT DOWWWWWWN!
Higgins is so rude and I hate him and I love him. :P
God made dirt and dirt don't hurt!
I hate Higgins and I think he's funny. I don't think I love him though. Hahahaha.
Yes, Amy, just like Rhett Butler!!
"You wouldn't have the face to ask as much for teaching me my OWN language!" I adore this scene.
I agree with you Amy!
Sometimes I think Eliza's a bit dense at the beginning to have such a good grip on everything by the end of the movie. :P
I need a two story library with a piano!!!!
I know... it's like she underwent an intelligence boost too. Haha.
Oh! My nephew's coming over soon.... nooooo! :( I'll be back for tomorrow hopefully!
"I'm a good girl I am!!!!!"
Looks like we're betting on friends now :) "Chugga chugga chugga choo choo"
"Well, put her in the dustbin."
"AOWWWWWW!"
Higgins has no idea how to recognize his faults. :P
I think Higgins is the high-functioning sociopath. Hahaha.
Give me that libary any day! :D
I must sadly go! I'm so sorry! Lovely "meeting" you all!
See you tomorrow hopefully
So far behind you all, shoopid YouTube.
and HAHA great sherlock reference Melody! :D
Because every girl wants the streets filled with young men shooting themselves for her. :P
Awww :( See ya tomorrow Evie!
Bye Evelyn! Nice chatting with you!
CHOCOLAAAAAAATE
Bye Ash and Amy!! and everyone!! :-)
Lovely chatting! See you soon hopefully!
Mrs. Pearce reminds me of someone, but I don't know who?
Yeah, that's even worse than having a line of beaux on a string and making them crazy for you. :P
That started to get inspirational!
Ooh, she starts out a presumptuous flower girl and ends a presumptuous insect. Hmm.
The aaaaaaaaaaangels will WEEP for you!
(And all the Whovians gasp in horror.)
I WANT THE BEDROOM
Amy, remember me reenacting scenes like that one when I came into your room? ;D
Oh my goodness Mrs. Pearce looks so solemn and scary, haha.
I kinda like the wallpaper, but then it gets on my nerves.
That's an awful lot of steam for one bathtub. I hope she doesn't get burnt. :P
That's an awful lot of steam for one bathtub. I hope she doesn't get burnt. :P
That's an awful lot of steam for one bathtub. I hope she doesn't get burnt. :P
Dump her in fully clothed for goodness' sake!
If I can't be Eliza in this show, I want to be a maid. :D Even THEY have nice dresses.
he sounds like my siblings taking a bath, hahahaha.
He's holding half of a head! Henry Hamlet!
That IS a lot of steam. Wow.
This song--er, chant--is annoying. :P
Well... at least Henry Higgins isn't a wife-hunter. Hahahahaha.
He kinda sounds like Mr. Rogers for a second!
HAHAHAHAHAHA Ally!!!
This song is exceedingly annoying.
BAHAHAHAHAH about Henry Hamlet though. And your siblings, Ally. (My brother loves taking baths. He becomes Aquaman. :P)
How was Rex Harrison on Broadway?
coughijustfinallycheckedthisbeforeloggingoffcoughcough
The Angels! *Hides and clutches my TARDIS necklace*
Ok I'm really going now my newphew's arrived
Um, dude, you already swear a lot. :P
Real mature Higgins, blame everything on women! How did you get on earth again?
Oh Henry... shut your ugly dump truck face already. :P (Anybody who didn't get that reference... it was a reference... just so you know.)
I wanna see this famous large Wagnerian mother. :P
More booming and boisterous than you? And I always though he said Hungarian barber :) CHIPMUNKS!!
I wanna see this famous large Wagnerian mother. :P
*mute button*
So whaaaat'd you all do today? :P
Wow, Alfie, I've never seen a more iron-y arm than yours! Not...
Thanks for the warning Melody :)
I went to school.. Man, I thought he was going to throw dirt on them!
Purple and green!! Ewww!!
*unmutes temporarily*
It wasn't necessarily a warning... but I dislike that song. :P
Her own father don't even know her :D
*mutes again*
Listen, everybody! General L-- no, wait, wrong musical.
Um, Miss Dashwood begs me to inform you all that her internet is being very Mean at the moment and isn't letting her comment/load comments. Hopefully she'll be back soon.
*unmutes*
He looks so different without his hat!!
I WANT HIGGINS' LIBRARY. The room, that is, and shelves.
EWWWW Alfred is disgusting.
I'm willing to tell ya, I'm wanting to tell ya, I'm waiting to tell ya!
Breathy laugh!!! (Studio C reference :)
Henry looks so amused. :P
And Pickering looks shocked and disturbed. :P
I don't know why Higgins thinks he can change people's personalities too...
"What are you doing here?" Hey, Amy, it's when I came to see you. hahahaha.
That wink! And I do not like that dress at all!! #sorrynotsorry
LEFAVORITEDRESSSSSSSSSS
AND JUST YOU WAIT!
Also I'm back, hi peasants. And Melody. :D
NO CHOCOLATES?!??!!
The last straw, haha.
Okay, so THIS right now is Audrey Hepburn, but when she switches to "one day I'll be famous" it'll be Marni Nixon.
I really like Julie Andrews version of this song!
Hi, Majesty. :P
YAY DRESS.
Wow, that's a big voice change! And I thought my glasses were dirty :P
Haha, I'm so used to listening to this song on the soundtrack that it sounds weird to have the king in there...
HAHAHAHA HENRY'S FAAAAAACE
"What the WHAT is she doing." :P
She just sat in his lap like he was Santa or something!
And are they shooting him or beheading him?
"Can I have a pair of capris?"
The end of the song is the best part. :D
Interesting theology, Higgins...
Yay! Fun training montage!
Amy and Melody in unison: NO ELIZA YOU DIDN'T SY THAT, YOU DIDN'T EVEN SAY THAT.
Santa's lap, Ashley... bahahahahahahahaha.
So I read the script for the Broadway recently, and she passes out in this scene? "Hever!"
FIRE!!!
And the harmony nerd in me squees!
She's wearing a tie?!?!
I want a cup of tea now.
HAHAHAHHA POOR PICKERING.
Did he just say pline caike?
Boo Higgins, boo!! Badly done, Emma!
Why is that maid telling the policeman? o.O
I want tea too. AND a tart.
Because the policeman is her beauuuuuuuuuuu. :{P
Can Higgins even do this?
Why did they sleep with newspapers over their head?
SHHHHH EVERYBODY APPRECIATE THE SPEECH
And his coat is purple...
I ADORE THIS SCENE
