Period Drama Ending Tournament - First Poll

The results are in, and I've listed our nominees in order of nomination and seconded nomination.  I felt this was the only fair way to do it, but I'll admit I was quite peeved that most of my favorites ended up competing against each other.  Sigh.  At any rate, here they are.

1. Emma (2009)

2. Pride and Prejudice (1995)

3. Sense and Sensibility (1995)

4. Cranford

5. Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel

6. Little Women (1994)

7. North and South

8. The Sound of Music

9. Ever After

(Note: I vaguely know Ever After's storyline, but I have no idea if this
picture is actually from the ending or not, as I haven't actually seen the film.)

10. The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)

11. Sense and Sensibility (2008)

(so this isn't actually the last scene, but I couldn't find a picture of the last scene.
Plus, this one made me giggle because of the look on Edward's face.)

12. Wives and Daughters

13. Little Dorrit

14. The Young Victoria

15. Nicholas Nickleby (2001)

via
16. Les Miserables (2012)

I realize there is more to the Les Mis finale than Enjolras.  Like, you know, the rest of Les Amis.
But see, they're there-- some of them.  Courfeyrac on the left and Grantaire on the right.

17. Master and Commander

(Note: I have not seen, nor do I know very much about any part of Master and Commander,
and I don't know how it ends, so here is a picture of Russell Crowe standing in front of water.)
17. Northanger Abbey

18. Our Mutual Friend

Final episode of Our Mutual Friend, also known as "John Needs a Doctor"

19. Bright Star

20. Return to Cranford

This was nominated but never seconded-- however, I love the ending so I took
the hostess' privilege and seconded it myself so we'd have an even 20.

Please go vote in the polls on the sidebar!  They will remain up until next Wednesday.

Nooooo! Why did not you use Mr. Random? I think that would have been *more* fair.
Good grief, all the ones I nominated are in the first poll and they're most of my favorites! Dear, dear. Well, I'll have to go for Emma, of course. But I wanted to be able to vote for P&P. *sniffle* It was the first period drama ending that MMFVHI.

On poll 2... yikes. Can't decide between N&S and TSP. Well... I guess the N&S ending was more striking. There were lots of favorite scenes in TSP. ;)

For 3... I'll have to say Little Dorrit, although I like all those endings. ;)

On 4... Return to Cranford, I s'pose. Hold on a second, Amy, did you vote for Les Mis when you haven't even seen the movie yet? *narrows eyes*

Oooooooh-OOOOOOOOHHHHH! A picture of Russell Crowe on a ship!!!!! *SWOON-PLOP*

Oh, wait. What polls?

Kidding. :P

I never got the chance to actually come and nominate any films, so I am redeeming myself by voting now! Can I share my votes? No? Too bad. :P

The first poll... Emma 2009 hands-down. No competition.

The second poll was another no-brainer: NORTH AND SOUTH.

Oooooh, this cursed third poll. How I agonized and suffered. Wives and Daughters, Little Dorrit, and The Young Victoria are some of my very favorite endings. BUT, I finally went with Wives and Daughters. The Young Victoria is amazing, but the ending is pretty sad as well as sweet, and Little Dorrit has a LOVELY ending as well that also happens to include my beloved Matthew Macfadyen. But I chose Wives and Daughters because 1) it is unique and a different type of ending than most period dramas with it showing them in Africa and all, and 2) OH MY GOODNESS MOLLY AND ROGER ARE JUST SO STINKIN' CUTE. And... and... and she went to Africa with him. And they're so adorable. It just doesn't get much better than that.

As for the fourth poll, well, do I even have to say which one I chose? IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY. :D

Wonderful competition, m'dear Chauvie! I am so excited to see which movie ending trumps all. *enter mischievous grin* Really, all these endings are so wonderful. Well, the ones I've seen anyway. I have not seen Ever After, The Scarlet Pimpernel (sniff, sniff), Nicholas Nickleby, Our Mutual Friend, or Bright Star... Goodness, I have some period drama watching to do! :D

What a lovely idea for a contest! I didn't nominate (I usually only read blogs once a week, so I only saw that post now), but I'm glad you used your hostess privilege to include the ending of Return to Cranford, I would certainly have seconded that, it's so lovely!

'Love, Mr. Buxton. It's the final word.' *happy sigh*

Ooh, these were some hard choices! Especially poll #2! It was hard to pick between TSP, and N&S. :) But I went with TSP.

(Actually, Chauvie, I must correct you a bit... in that picture, Russell Crowe is not on a ship. He is indeed on land. I've seen Master and Commander numerous times, so I know these things. :D )

The second poll was a hard one N&S AND TSP in the same poll? Hard choice there. But I believe in championing the under-dog, so I went with TSP. Can't wait to see the outcomes :D

Mellow D.,
Why didn't I use Mr. Random? Because, Marshmellow, I'M AN IDIOT! WHY didn't I think of that? Ugh. Well, it's too late now. I shall just have to remember that for next time. :D
I voted for Emma and Little Dorrit, but then I chose TSP and Les Mis. Yes, I did. :D I've not actually seen it in its entirety, no, but I have seen clips from the end and I've listened to the epilogue and looked at every picture I could get my hands on. So I felt justified in voting for it. ;)

Puddle Duck,
Heehee, I thought that picture might please you. ;) Oh, wait, he's not on a ship? Whoopsies. I'll edit the caption-- thanks!
Awwww, I'm glad you went with W&D... I was SOOOO tempted to vote for that one, but Little Dorrit won out. And no, you need not say which you voted for in the fourth poll. Master and Commander, right?
KIDDING KIDDING I'M JUST KIDDING.
Oh, and you need to see OMF. It's splendiferous.

Birdienl,
I love that line! Such a sweet and happy ending... *sniff*

Molly,
I kind of knew you would. ;)

Katelyn,
I know! I didn't have such a hard time with N&S and TSP (TSP all the way!) but I had such a hard time deciding in the first and third. I should have just randomized the list... sigh.

Hahaha. *in Rachel Lynde voice* "I WISH you'd consulted me first!"
:P
It's very sad how few votes Emmer is getting!! *sniffle* Hey, if the polls ever need to be evened out, you should do that think where we vote for something to be brought back in. haha. (I think Miss Elizabeth did that one time in one of the tournaments...)
Humph, well I still don't think that's quite fair. ;P But then, I don't really care either because none of my favorites were in poll 4... hahaha. I'm wary of seeing it go into competition with the rest, though. *raises eyebrow*

Waaaait a second... Petie hasn't seen TSP?
O_O
"Noooo, I cannot belieeeeve it!"

By the way, I would have seconded RTC if I'd known nobody else did. ;)

The first poll is the toughest for me—so hard to pick between S&S and Cranford! Second one was easy; I voted for The Sound of Music. Picked Wives and Daughters on poll no. 3, because I haven't seen any of the others (excepting S&S '08, which I didn't care for). And on the fourth I was wavering between Our Mutual Friend and Return to Cranford, neither of which I was too crazy about, but ended up going with OMF because I remembered the bit with the old gentleman (can't recall his name) suddenly speaking up to his friends in the last scene. :)

Wow, that's a lot of favorite endings! :D Thank you for seconding Return to Cranford - I really liked the ending, but had already put in my comment. Am looking forward to voting very much!!!

I had voted onn everything but then after I read everyone's comments I realized that Emma was on the 1st poll! How could I have missed that?!?!?! *Pounds head in frustration*

On the second poll I thought that TSP would be at the top the whole time! No offense to all the shocked N&S fans but i really HATED that ending!

Poll #3 I might vote for Nicholas Nickleby but... I haven't seen it yet... I am waiting to watch it with some friends...

Finally #4 This one was SOOOOOO hard! I haven't seen Les Mis *Apologetic smile* and it's been years since I watched Our Mutual friend. Return to Cranford is cute but its the classic ending! So that is why I picked *drum roll* Master and Commander!!! Who all has actually seen that????

@ Melody - Nooooo, I haven't seen TSP. Woe is me!! I've read the book though, but... indeed it is not the same! One day, though... ONE DAY I shall see the movie. :)

@ Beatrix P. - *waves hand ecstatically in the air* I HAVE SEEN MASTER AND COMMANDER!! And I loves it muchly. :D

Katelyn said...

@ Petie-just make sure it's the 1982 version. The older black and white was okay, but I really liked Anthony Andrews-he got the switching between dandy to strategist down to an art.
Leslie Howard also did a good job, but he was so casual and didn't seem to take some things seriously (to me, at least).

Yay for Master and Commander fans!!!!!!!! We just bought the movie!!!!! I can't wait to see it again!

I love all of those! This is so hard, but I guess I'd choose Anne of Green Gables, followed by Wives and Daughters and North and South

Emma Jane said...

How excessively diverting! Choosing between Emma and Sense and Sensibility was...difficult, to say the least. But I picked the latter, because it really is probably my favourite movie and plus, it's just so CLASSIC! The second poll was somewhat of a difficulaty choosing between North and South and TSP- but North and South won over. ;)
Third poll-UM, THE YOUNG VICTORIA! All the way, people. One of the most beautiful movies EVER.
Poll four was a no-brainer. Beyond a doubt, Return to Cranford. But where was Bright Star? I would've voted for that! Since I end up in a puddle of tears every time... ;)
And I love that picture of John and Fanny, with the flower in his hair! *Swoon*
Thrilling in the extreme, m'dear!

What a smashing contest! Pity I was too late to vote! :P Crumbs. ;) This is what I get for not checking this blog often enough.

Amy, thank you so much for following Resourceful Gals (the blog my mom and I started)! I think you'll enjoy it! :D
