Period Drama Quote Quiz Answers

And now, announcing the scores from last week's Period Drama Quote Quiz...
The Anne-girl comes in first with 26 points! Although I must say her win was not strictly fair, since she and I (being sisters) have seen all the same movies and she knows which quotes I like. :)

Second place goes to Alexandra, with 22 points, while Hayden and Miss Laurie tie for third with 21 points each. Other scores...

Melody: 17 (though she did have a hint :))
Miss Molly: 10 (also my sister, but she hasn't seen as many period dramas as I have)
Rachel: 8
Ella: 5

Thank you to everyone for playing! And now for the answers.  (Oh, and I apologize for using so many quotes from musicals... I know that technically they aren't period dramas, they're period musical comedies.  Or tragedies, depending.  Whatever.)

1) Well, he rode seven miles to bring her a wasp's nest and you don't do that for no reason!
~Miss Phoebe Browning, Wives and Daughters (1999)
(I know the picture isn't from that scene... I just like this picture)

2) She could talk the hind leg off a mule. Hmm, wouldn't that be a change around here.
~Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables (1985)

3) It seems to me, that if there is a bad taste in your mouth, you spit it out. You don't constantly swallow it back. ~Barbara Spooner, Amazing Grace (2006)

4) Why should I break my head about the outside world? Let the outside world break its own head! Well put, no?
~Mordcha the innkeeper, Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

5) If you refuse this offer, you will be the most ungrateful, wicked girl, and the angels will weep for you. ~Henry Higgins, My Fair Lady (1964)
(I was this close to posting a picture of Anthony Andrews as Prof. Higgins instead of Rex Harrison-- I restrained myself and used a movie pic)

6)
King Mongkut: I do not remember such words.
Anna Leonowens: I remember them.
King Mongkut: I will do remembering!
~The King and I (1956)

7)
Amy Dorrit: I don't think I shall ever learn to be a lady of leisure, Fanny.
Fanny Dorrit Sparkler: Now that is not the spirit, is it? Of course it is hard. It's downright boring sometimes but one just has to work at it.
~Little Dorrit (2008)

8)
Martha Sowerby: Now, what would you like to wear?  Black, black or black?
Mary Lennox: Are you blind? They're all black.  And I will not be laughed at, servant.
~The Secret Garden (1993)
(I know this picture isn't from that scene, but it was the only one I could find with Mary and Martha.  Oh, and am I the only one that thinks Colin's name should have been Lazarus?)

9)
Emma Woodhouse: He's gone to London to have his hair cut.
Mr. Knightley: His hair cut? Imperative business indeed.
~Emma (2009)
(Yes, yes, yes, not the right scene, but such a cute picture! I snagged it from Melody's blog)

10)
Inigo Montoya: I do not think you would accept my help, since I am only waiting around to kill you.
The Man in Black/Westley: That does put a damper on our relationship.
~The Princess Bride (1987)

11) My dear chap, I never would have dreamt of depriving you of your moment of triumph. Alas, a moment was all I could spare.
~Sir Percy Blakeney, The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)

12) I am heartily ashamed of myself, Lizzy. But don't despair, it'll pass; and no doubt more quickly than it should.
~Mr. Bennet, Pride and Prejudice (1995)

13) That's my sister. She's completely bald in front.
~Jo March, Little Women (1994)

14)
Huntsman: View halloo!
Horse: Oh, yes, definitely. A view halloo.
Adorable Irish Fox: View halloo? Faith and begorrah, 'tis them redcoats again!
~Mary Poppins (1964)
(Okay, so this is a children's partially animated movie... but it takes place during the Edwardian era.  Your point?)

15) Mrs. Jennings is a wealthy woman with a married daughter, she has nothing to do but marry off everyone else's.
~Elinor Dashwood, Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Yay, I tied for third! Congrats to Hayden and the others who played!

Haha, I love that photo from Wives and Daughters!

I the quotes from the musicals were a bit confusing to be because I recognized all of them but couldn't put my finger on which film them came from. I finally ended up just Googling the last 3 or 4 quotes I wasn't able to guess. The My Fair Lady quote especially bugged me because I know that I'd heard it many times and loved the way the actor said the words "and the angels will weep for you"! :)

That Secret Garden film was a favorite of my family's while I was growing up! The story has special sentiment for my family because my grandmother named my father Colin after the boy in the book. Lazarus? I'm not sure I've ever met anybody named Lazarus before so I can only think of the man in the Bible who I think would have been quite robust and on fire for God before and after he died. :)

In my family we quote The Princess Bride very often so it's one of those films where the quotes are so recognizable to me!

I haven't seen Mary Poppins in forever! But the "Adorable Irish Fox", his quote sounded so familiar! hehe

Thanks for this game Miss Dashwood! It was such fun to play! I hope you do more of these from time to time. ;)

Anne-girl,
Haha, we have similar taste in pictures, I see.

Miss Laurie,
If I do this again (which I would very much like to) I won't use so many musicals quotes. I think I confused everyone a little... sorry!
I only suggested that Colin should be Lazarus because of Mary and Martha, get it? :) That is so neat that your father is named after Colin! Someday, I would love to name my children after literary characters.
Mary Poppins is the ultimate classic children's film... I love it. Especially the fox.

Milisande,
Oh, I'm so sorry you missed it! I'll be posting another one in a few months, though, so do check back again!

(runs around with my head in my hands)

I *KNEW* that one quote was from Fiddler. And I knew The King and I one, I just was thinking it was the kids, and going, nooo, it wasn't them...:-D And I can't *believe* I didn't recognize the Mary Poppins one. hahaha! Well, I am excited about being in second. :-)

And I would *die* to have seen Anthony Andrews as Professor Higgins. You don't know how many hours I've spent scrounging the Internet to find a bootleg. :-P Ah, well...

Hayden,
Congratulations! :)
I'm always amused when I think I know something, then I see it out of context and I'm all, "wait, what?" :P

Alexandra,
The Fiddler quote is one of my dad's favorites (second only to "Keep your diseased chickens!!")
If you ever do find MFL with Anthony Andrews on the Internet... well, do think of me, spare a thought for me... and post it on your blog!

I second that!
