I think this is my favorite of Michael Gambon's many roles! That quote just says it all, so delightful! :)

Miss Laurie and Melody,
Isn't Michael Gambon perfect as the Squire? I agree; this is my favorite of his little sayings. :)

Julia,
Why thank you! You certainly seem to be of the "race that knows Joseph". :)

Heehee. We just re-watched this movie a few nights ago. Love this line! :D

This is probably my favorite line in the whole film. :-) Along with the bit with Mrs. Gibson...

Mrs. Gibson: An engagement is an engagement...
Squire Hamley: Did I say it was an elephant, ma'am?

Love Michael Gambon! :-)

Alexandra,
I was talking with a friend of mine about casting period dramas, and her dad interjected, "Anything with Michael Gambon and Judi Dench in it is sure to be a winner." I have to agree-- he's hilarious as Squire Hamley (not to mention Mr. Holbrook, Mr. Woodhouse, Sir Charles Fox...)
I think I might use the elephant quote sometime. I love that one, too.
